5 Things to Know Before Your Medical Appointment with an Interpreter

March 5, 2026 · 4 min read

Going to the doctor is stressful enough without a language barrier. If you've booked a Portuguese interpreter for your medical appointment — or you're considering it — here are five things that will help your visit go smoothly.

1. You Have the Right to an Interpreter

Under federal law, healthcare facilities that receive federal funding (which includes most hospitals and clinics) are required to provide language access services to patients with limited English proficiency. This means you have the legal right to request an interpreter at no cost to you.

However, the interpreters provided by hospitals are often overbooked, available only by phone, or shared across multiple patients. Hiring your own professional interpreter ensures you get dedicated, in-person (or virtual) support for your entire appointment.

2. Bring a List of Your Medications

Medication names can be different in Brazil and the US. Bring a written list of everything you take — including the Portuguese name, dosage, and how often you take it. This helps your interpreter translate accurately and ensures your doctor has the full picture.

3. Write Down Your Questions in Advance

It's easy to forget what you wanted to ask once you're in the exam room. Write your questions down in Portuguese before the appointment. Your interpreter can review them and make sure every question gets asked and answered.

4. Speak Directly to Your Doctor

A common mistake patients make is talking to the interpreter instead of the doctor. Look at your doctor, speak normally, and the interpreter will translate. This keeps the conversation natural and helps build trust between you and your healthcare provider.

5. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Clarification

If something doesn't make sense — whether it's a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or medication instructions — ask your interpreter to clarify. A good interpreter will make sure you fully understand everything before you leave the appointment. Your health depends on clear communication, and that's exactly what a professional interpreter is there to provide.
